Unrefined coconut oil is expeller-pressed oil that has not gone through a refining process. It tends to have a more “fruity,” coconut flavor as a result. Many raw foodists seek out unrefined coconut oil because it does represent the raw form of the coconut, with a smooth and silky texture.
There is far more refined coconut oil on the market, making the unrefined version much more expensive. We love that we can get unrefined coconut oil at regular coconut oil prices, however. Who knew quality could be this affordable.
We love this unrefined, organic, virgin coconut oil, particularly at such an extremely good price (click and scroll). The price is so good on this particular coconut oil that we use it for cooking even though high temperatures do destroy some of the beneficial properties. At this price, I cook with it, use it on my face and scalp, and I consume it uncooked in milk shakes. Mmmm.
You can go to a local health food store and pay $15-20 per quart. That quart might last a few weeks in this house. Better yet, get it online for $37 per gallon (and better still if you are into five gallon quantities). I buy the gallon or five and then keep some in a quart jar in my kitchen for easy access.
The oil is solid in cooler temperatures and liquid in hot summer months. Like all virgin coconut oil, it will have coconut undertones in the flavor.
Mmmmm.
